Tips for staying warm while winter camping

Photo by Vincent Guth on Unsplash. You don’t have to give up camping in winter if you are prepared and able to keep nice and warm. Here are some tips to help!

Use the right equipment Make sure you have a sleeping bag which is suitable for winter. You don’t want to be shivering away in a thin summer one. A sleeping bag liner can add an extra layer of warmth without adding much weight to your pack. A decent ground mat or tent carpet can make a lot of difference as the cold ground can quickly sap your heat.

Pay attention to your extremities Keep your extremities warm, if they are colder than you think they should be try to warm them up as soon as possible. It’s these areas which will become damaged first so think about wearing gloves, socks and a hat when you sleep to keep them toasty warm.

Have a warm meal Having a warm meal can help to keep your core temperature up, and a hot cup of tea can warm up cold hands too! If you’re tight on space but still want to make sure you have some warm food, have you considered one of our Hot Pack Meals? They contain everything you need in one package and are ready to eat hot in 10-12 minutes.

Making your sleeping space warm If you have the facilities to boil water, a hot water bottle can make a big difference on a cold night. If not, a couple of disposable hand warmers thrown into the bottom of a chilly sleeping bag can really warm things up. A flask of hot drink by your sleeping bag can warm you up if you wake up in the middle of the night freezing cold.Hopefully some of these tips will make your next cold weather camping trip a little more pleasant, and remember, wrapping up warm to begin with is much easier than trying to get warm when you are already cold!
